Section 2 - Totentanz (Dance of death)
This section starts with a new tempo, crotchet = 120, as the dance macabre rhythm is introduced by maracas. It's in 7/4 and is based on 5 beats of quavers and 2 beats of semiquavers. Almost all of the chords on the piano, marimba and strings in this section are based on open 5ths often superimposed on top of each other. Section 2 is loud, aggressive and fairly fast.
Glissandi , tremolo and double stops on violin and cello are features in this heavily accented section
Section 2 comes to a climax with the main tune (from section 1) and inversion in contrary motion on piano, followed by a scintillating glissando (with double stops and tremolo) from up high on the violin to down low on the cello and back up again.
