Question 5 - Harmony Loose ends
Remember, the basic idea is to justify every note as being in some way acceptable with the chords you choose.
N.B. Notes that leap are harmony notes.
N.B. Moving by step is Harmony-passing-harmony.
About 3/4 of the chords will be formed using basic harmony and passing notes. There will be some other issues to consider though.
Below are examples of slightly more complicated issues taken from past papers

Harmony Question 2011 Q. 5
Notice that there is a very clear cadence every 4 bars in this example, so not only do the chords need to fit, but they musc make a cadence Reminder; V-i, VI-i, ?-V, V-VI are the 4 cadences. notice the spelling is i as the first chord is minor etc.
Bar 6. uses chord V7. Chord V can have an extra harmony note (1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th). In Gm chord V is D7.

The style of accompaniment is worth noting also. Continue similarly to the given bars. The basic rhythm in the accomp. is dotted crotchet-quaver. Use this everywhere. The little link at the end of the 2nd given bar should be used every 2 bars if possible. Don't forget to adapt it to whatever chord you're using. N.B. It doesn't have to have the exact same shape every time it's used. It just needs to be based on the pattern in Bar 2.
Notice the natural and sharp signs in the accomp. These are the 6th and 7th in the melodic minor scales. This question is in Gminor. As the accompaniment has a melodic element to it, the melodic minor scale needs to be used.Use the same style of accompaniment throughout.

Harmony Questions 2010 Q. 5
Even though there is no really obvious stand out cadences in terms of long notes, it would still be useful to assume cadence chords go at the end of each 4 bars. It just sounds right!!! As a rule, always look for cadences every 4 bars.
In Bar 8 below you must use V7 (Eb7) as the Db leaps. Db is the 7th of the chord. It has to be a harmony note due to the leap

Similarly, the 2nd last chord at the end of the page must be Eb7 as the Db (7th) leaps
The example below from 2009 is worth examining for understanding of the note of anticipation and the suspension. Let's go through the chords one note at a time. The tied Db in the first half bar is a note of anticipation, i.e. even though it is in the previous bar, it is a harmony note (anticipates) in the following bar.
The 2nd chord must be Eb7, not an inversion of Bbm for 2 reasons. 1) The next chord has to be Ab which cant be preceeded by chord ii, and 2) the first note, Db is a harmony note, therefore the chord has to be a 7th.
2 more notes of anticipation follow with the next 2 chords, Ab and Eb.
On the next line the first chord is straight forward but the 2nd chord (Ab) shows us a suspension. The note f is at first a harmony note, then its suspended (tied) where it becomes a non harmony note, then resolves by step!!!!! This is repeated exactly in the 2nd last chord.

the bassline (accompaniment) below is from 2008. Note the first 2 bars are given. First study these 2 bars and continue similarly. The main feature of the accompaniment is the crotchet followed by rests in the first bar and a half. Stick to this the whole way through. The "run" at the end of the 2nd bar wont always work however so adapt the idea as shown to suit different chord progressions.
