Bass Aria

The 6th movement is a Bass Aria. Notice that the voice is lower than the tenor, written in the Bass clef as opposed to the Tenor, and accompanied by oboe , string ensemble and continuo.
The 1st motif to notice here is the strings opening Bar in Cm. Just over 1 bar long, this motif returns several times throughout and  may be referred to as a Ritornello.
Notice the
trill (ornamentation).
Strings repeat pretty much the same motif each time they enter in a variety of keys. Learn this motif. Usually it occurs in the middle of a bar as at Bar 4 and 12 (Cm), Sometimes at the start.
Bars 25 and 28 are in Gm. 36 and 40 - Fm, 43 and 48 – Cm.
This Aria is like a Bass and Oboe duet in the same way as the previous one was like a duet for Tenor and Flute.(Don't however describe them as duets in the exam)
Almost every bar of the elaborate concerto-like Oboe part  is based on the same sequential motif-the last 8 notes from bar 2!
This motif also shows up in the Bass part; Bar 11,19,22, and 40. As with the other Aria s, notice the melisma, and parallel movement.
The form is Ternary, ABA.

Always observe  the text; "appease my conscience…comfort." etc.  Notice how the text of the arias is less severe and more praising than that of the recitatives.

This is the string(ritornello) introduction  to the 6th movement. Again the vocal part is based on the instrumental part and the same patterns can be found throughout. The first bar is another ritornello (returning) theme!!!
Picture
It is very typical for a piece of music to remain in the Tonic key in the A section and go through several related keys in the contrasting B section.
